While the media has been buzzing that Kanye West has sued Jay-Z, the truth is that Ye is coming after Roc-A-Fella Records and EMI April Music.
Kanye was formerly signed to Roc-A-Fella Records and is filing two lawsuits. The first law suit is aimed at Roc-A-Fella Records claiming monies owned to West by the label. The second lawsuit is aimed at the publishing company, EMI, over the rights of more than 200 songs written by the end of 2011 that EMI was collecting royalties.
Kanye is one of many artists that has been left on the short end of a publishing deal. Current changes in the Copyright Act, like the Music Modernization Act, have helped change the landscape to help artists like Ye and others ensure that they are to receive the royalties that they are rightfully owed.
